Working in resource-poor settings, especially in remote areas, is incredibly challenging. At Palliative Peace, we strive to provide healthcare in the underserved regions of Punjab, where medical facilities are scarce. However, attracting staff to work here is a significant hurdle. Finding caretakers, nurses, and cooks willing to work around-the-clock in such isolated areas is tough, despite offering free food, lodging, and travel expense. For instance, my better half is seen here dressing Jaiparkash, a 45-year-old patient with necrotizing fasciitis, referred to us by PGIMER for palliative care. When he arrived, he had a severe wound on his calf and suffered from high fevers. We managed his condition by doing dressing changes with paraffin gauze and ointments which were also expensive. We anyhow managed to heal his huge wound.
There was a time when Jaiparkash developed a high fever, signalling that he urgently needed hospitalization. Without an ambulance available, I had to improvise and managed to get him into the back seat of my car. We then embarked on a 160-kilometer journey to the nearest tertiary center.
These moments can be incredibly distressing for us, as managing patient care in such challenging conditions is no easy task. Yet, we pour our heart and soul into it, driven by our commitment to provide the best care possible for those in need.
My spouse, who learned basic care through a short course, has taken on the role of caregiver because we cannot afford a nurse. The remoteness of our village makes it difficult to attract anyone from nearby towns to work here. It’s a constant struggle for us.

At just 3 months old, little Jaspreet was full of life and curiosity, a bundle of joy for his parents. However, this joy was soon overshadowed by a mysterious illness that began to steal away his milestones one by one. Jaspreet was diagnosed with Infantile Tremor Syndrome (ITS), a rare and progressive disorder that led to the significant regression of his motor skills and developmental milestones. His parents, unaware of the underlying cause, were devastated to see their vibrant child deteriorate so rapidly.
The turning point came when Jaspreet was referred to our care at Palliative Peace. Upon admission to the ICU, our team of doctors discovered that Jaspreet’s condition was caused by a simple yet critical deficiency of Vitamin B12. This deficiency, if left untreated, had the potential to cause severe and long-term damage. Jaspreet’s parents were both heartbroken and relieved—they had never imagined that something as treatable as a vitamin deficiency could wreak such havoc on their baby’s life.
Under our care, Jaspreet began his journey towards recovery. The road was challenging, with each day presenting new obstacles. Yet, with the right treatment and unwavering dedication from our medical team, Jaspreet started to show signs of improvement. Slowly but surely, he began to regain some of the milestones he had lost.
Jaspreet’s story is a reminder of the importance of awareness and timely intervention in preventing such conditions. His parents, now informed and empowered, are doing everything they can to support his continued recovery. Though his journey is far from over, there is hope—hope that with proper care and attention, Jaspreet will grow up to lead a healthy, happy life.
At Palliative Peace, we are committed to ensuring that no child suffers needlessly. We stand with Jaspreet and his family, offering them the support and care they need in this difficult time. Together, we can make a difference, one life at a time.
Meet Prabhu, a brave 7-year-old who has faced more challenges than most of us can imagine. Diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a condition where the bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells, Prabhu’s life took a sudden turn. Just a few months ago, he was bound to a wheelchair, struggling with the weight of his illness.
But Prabhu’s story is not just about struggle; it’s about hope, resilience, and the power of compassionate care. Halfway through his treatment, Prabhu came under the care of our team at Palliative Peace. We saw his determination, his desire to overcome the odds, and we knew we had to give him all the support we could.
Every two months, Prabhu visits us to meet with his physicians and receive the medications that are vital to his recovery. Each visit is a milestone—a reminder of how far he has come. Today, we are overjoyed to see Prabhu no longer confined to his wheelchair. He is up, running, and enjoying life as any 7-year-old should. His laughter, his energy, and his zest for life are infectious.
The transformation we’ve witnessed in Prabhu is a testament to what can be achieved with the right care, knowledge, and support. It’s not just about treating the illness; it’s about caring for the whole person, understanding their needs, and being there for them in their time of crisis.
Prabhu’s journey is still ongoing, but the strides he has made fill us with immense pride and happiness. At Palliative Peace, we are dedicated to walking this journey with him, ensuring that he continues to thrive, surrounded by love, care, and hope.
Simran Kaur, a vibrant 7-year-old, has shown extraordinary courage in her battle against right orbit malignant rhabdomyosarcoma. Diagnosed at such a tender age, Simran underwent extensive surgery, but despite all efforts, the tumor recurred and eventually metastasized. Her journey has been one of immense bravery, resilience, and grace.
Simran came under our care at Palliative Peace in November 2020. Over the past year and a half, she became a cherished member of our family. Despite the harsh realities of her condition, Simran’s spirit remained unbroken. Her laughter echoed through our halls, and her presence brought warmth to everyone around her.
Throughout her time with us, our team worked tirelessly to ensure that Simran was not only comfortable but also surrounded by love and care. We witnessed her ups and downs, shared her moments of joy, and supported her through her pain. Her bravery inspired us all, reminding us why we do what we do.
Now, after spending 1.5 years with us, Simran is returning to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh. This is her final journey home, where she will be surrounded by her family as she prepares to say goodbye to this world. It was with heavy hearts that we bid her farewell, knowing that this was the last goodbye.
Simran’s story is one that will remain with us forever. She taught us about the strength of the human spirit, even in the face of insurmountable odds. As she leaves, she takes with her all our love, prayers, and the memories we’ve shared. At Palliative Peace, we are honored to have been a part of her journey and to have had the opportunity to care for such a remarkable young girl.
Goodbye, dear Simran. You will always be in our hearts.
Ridhi, a precious 7-month-old baby girl, was diagnosed with a serious heart condition—an 11 mm Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). When she first came to us, her situation was critical. Her tiny heart struggled, and her life hung in the balance. Her parents, overwhelmed and unaware of the available resources, had nearly lost hope that their child could survive.
At Palliative Peace, we knew time was of the essence. We quickly mobilized to expedite the urgent operation that Ridhi needed. With the combined efforts of our dedicated team, we raised the necessary funds and connected her family to a government scheme through the anganwadi program. This lifeline provided them with the support they desperately needed but didn’t know existed.
Ridhi’s surgery was a success. The operation corrected the VSD, and she is now on the path to recovery. Watching her recuperate, gaining strength each day, fills us with immense joy. Her story is a powerful reminder of the difference that timely intervention, resources, and compassionate care can make in saving lives.
Today, as we see Ridhi healing and thriving, we are filled with hope and pride. Her journey from critical condition to recovery is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the impact of a community coming together to help those in need. We wish Ridhi a long, healthy, and happy life, filled with all the joys that a child deserves.
Ridhi’s story is one of hope rekindled and lives changed, and we are honored to have been a part of it.
Ram, a bright 2-year-old boy, was recently diagnosed with retinoblastoma—a rare eye cancer that affects young children. Thankfully, his diagnosis came just in time, offering a chance for life-saving treatment. However, his journey to care was not without its challenges.
When we first met Ram’s parents, they were deeply concerned about the high costs associated with treatment in a big city like Chandigarh. They were unaware of the resources and support systems that could assist them. Their initial reluctance was understandable, as they faced the daunting prospect of navigating an unfamiliar healthcare system in a faraway place.
At Palliative Peace, we understood the urgency of the situation and the importance of timely treatment. Our team took up Ram’s case with dedication and compassion. We regularly followed up with his family, providing them with the information and encouragement they needed to move forward. We assured them that we would be by their side every step of the way.
After much persuasion and guidance, Ram’s parents made the brave decision to bring him to PGIMER in Chandigarh for treatment. Ram underwent enucleation, a necessary procedure to remove the affected eye, and is now on the road to recovery. His future looks brighter, thanks to the collective efforts of his family, our team, and the medical professionals at PGIMER.
Ram’s story is a powerful example of how timely intervention and persistent support can change the course of a child’s life. We are grateful to have been part of Ram’s journey and will continue to support him and his family as he recovers. We hope that his story inspires others to seek the care they need, no matter the obstacles, because every child deserves a chance at a healthy life.
Navdeep, a 13-year-old boy with an indomitable spirit, arrived at Palliative Peace facing a daunting challenge. He had been struggling with progressive pain, tenderness, and limited mobility in his lower limb, which had left him wheelchair-bound. His condition weighed heavily on him and his family, casting a shadow over his youthful days.
After receiving a call about Navdeep’s condition, our team at Palliative Peace swiftly took action. We analyzed his reports from a previous institution and quickly secured an appointment with an oncology specialist. It was then that Navdeep received a diagnosis that would change his life—osteosarcoma of the tibia, a type of bone cancer.
While the diagnosis was difficult to hear, it marked the beginning of a journey toward recovery. With a comprehensive treatment plan and ongoing therapy, Navdeep embarked on a path of healing. His resilience and determination shone through as he faced each day with courage and hope.
Today, Navdeep’s story is one of remarkable progress. No longer confined to a wheelchair, he is able to walk independently, a testament to his strength and the effectiveness of his treatment. His prognosis is promising, and he is once again able to enjoy the activities that every young boy should experience.
Navdeep’s journey from pain and immobility to independence and hope is a powerful reminder of the importance of timely intervention and dedicated care. At Palliative Peace, we are honored to have played a role in his recovery, and we are inspired by his unwavering spirit. Navdeep’s story is one of triumph over adversity, and we look forward to seeing him continue to thrive.
Shyam, a 13-year-old boy from Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, was brought to us under challenging circumstances. Diagnosed with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare and progressive neurological disorder, Shyam's situation was dire. His family, struggling financially, reached out for help after learning about Palliative Peace through social media. They were in desperate need of guidance and support as they sought a second opinion from a higher medical center.
Understanding the urgency of Shyam's condition and the family's limited resources, we arranged for his travel to Chandigarh. The expenses were managed through the Government of Uttarakhand Health Department, thanks to our persistent efforts. When Shyam arrived, it was clear that his condition had progressed to stage 3 of SSPE, a stage where medical interventions offer limited hope.
Shyam's condition was heartbreaking. He was mute, and his extremities were hyperflexed, reflecting the severity of his illness. Despite the grim prognosis, our focus shifted to what we could do—provide Shyam and his family with the care and compassion they needed during this difficult time.
We initiated palliative care, focusing on comfort and quality of life for Shyam. Extensive counseling was provided to his parents, helping them understand how to care for their son as his disease advances. Local bodies were also involved to ensure ongoing support for the family.
Shyam’s story is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those with terminal illnesses, especially in remote areas with limited access to advanced healthcare. While the medical options for Shyam were few, the emotional and practical support provided to him and his family made a significant difference in their lives. At Palliative Peace, we believe in offering dignity and comfort, even when cure is not possible, and Shyam's story is a testament to that commitment.
Sweet Noor was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed with terminal retinoblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. From the moment we met Noor, it was clear that her journey would be one of immense challenges. As her disease progressed and active treatment options were exhausted, we transitioned Noor into palliative care, focusing on providing comfort, dignity, and support to her and her family during her final days.
Recognizing the importance of community in palliative care, we traveled to Noor’s native village to ensure that she would be surrounded by the love and care she needed. We worked closely with a local Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) to arrange symptom control care, ensuring Noor was as comfortable as possible. Understanding the spiritual and emotional needs of the family, we engaged a local spiritual leader to provide solace and guidance.
Noor’s family was struggling not only with the emotional burden of her illness but also with financial hardships. We coordinated with a local NGO to help Noor's father find employment, providing much-needed stability for the family. Additionally, we offered financial assistance to help them pay off debts, alleviating some of the pressure they were under.
The emotional toll on Noor’s parents was immense, and we provided extensive counseling to prepare them for the inevitable outcome of Noor’s condition. We wanted to ensure that they were supported every step of the way, helping them navigate this incredibly difficult time with as much strength and peace as possible.
Last month, Noor’s brave journey came to an end. I was by her bedside, reciting religious hymns as she peacefully transitioned. Noor’s passing was not painful; through our efforts across all four domains of palliative care—physical, emotional, social, and spiritual—we were able to manage her condition and provide her with the dignity she deserved in her final moments.
Noor’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of holistic care in palliative settings. Her life, though short, was filled with love, support, and a community that came together to ensure she was never alone. We are honored to have been a part of her journey, and we will carry the lessons learned from Noor’s care forward as we continue to support others in their time of need.
Vikas, a 12-year-old boy from Amritsar, faced a battle that no child should have to endure. Diagnosed with severe Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Minimal Residual Disease (ALL-MRC), his prognosis was grim, and the doctors had numbered his days. In the face of such daunting news, the team at Palliative Peace stood by Vikas and his family, committed to making his remaining days as meaningful and joyful as possible.
Vikas’s father, a humble man who earned his living through menial jobs, struggled to provide for his family. Despite their financial hardships, he had a heart full of love and hope for his son. The burden of Vikas’s illness weighed heavily on him, both emotionally and financially. Recognizing the immense pressure on the family, Palliative Peace stepped in to offer their unwavering support.
Understanding the importance of maintaining emotional well-being in such challenging times, the team provided daily counseling to Vikas's parents over the phone. These conversations offered them comfort and practical advice, helping them navigate the difficulties of their situation. Additionally, the team made monthly home visits to Amritsar, ensuring Vikas and his family received the care and support they needed close to home.
In an effort to bring some joy and create cherished memories, the team decided to organize a special day for Vikas. They knew that despite the gravity of his condition, moments of happiness could offer significant relief and strength.
On a bright day, the team arrived in Amritsar with a plan to brighten Vikas's spirits. They took him to a bustling mall, where the vibrant atmosphere contrasted sharply with the harsh reality of his illness. The mall was filled with laughter and excitement, a world away from the hospital rooms and medical appointments that had become his everyday reality.
As Vikas walked through the mall, his eyes sparkled with wonder. The team helped him pick out a few toys and clothes, allowing him to experience the joy of shopping without the constraints of his illness. The trip didn’t just provide him with material items, but it also filled his heart with happiness.
Later, the team treated Vikas and his family to lunch at a well-regarded restaurant. The meal was more than just food; it was a moment of normalcy and indulgence in a world that had been overtaken by illness. Vikas enjoyed his meal, his laughter resonating through the restaurant, creating a temporary escape from his pain.
These acts of kindness were not just gestures but expressions of deep empathy and understanding. They represented the commitment of Palliative Peace to not only manage the medical aspects of care but also to address the emotional and psychological needs of their patients and families.
Vikas’s story is one of profound compassion and resilience. In the face of unimaginable challenges, he experienced moments of joy and love that will remain with him and his family. The efforts of Palliative Peace to make Vikas’s remaining days filled with light and happiness are a testament to the power of kindness and the impact it can have on those enduring the darkest of times.
Jyot, a 6-month-old baby, was born into a world filled with hope and promise, but his journey took a heartbreaking turn when he was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. This rare and severe condition affects the muscles responsible for movement, leading to progressive weakness and respiratory challenges. The prognosis for Jyot was deeply distressing, and his family was faced with the harsh reality of a treatment that was both miraculous and financially out of reach.
The treatment for SMA Type 1, a groundbreaking gene therapy known as Zolgensma, offers a glimmer of hope with its potential to transform Jyot’s life. However, the cost of this treatment is staggering—Rs 16 crore, or $2.125 million. For Jyot's family, this amount is beyond their wildest dreams and remains an unattainable sum, casting a shadow over their hopes for a cure.
Faced with this grim financial barrier, Palliative Peace has stepped in to offer the support that money cannot buy. Understanding the emotional and physical toll on Jyot and his family, the team has dedicated themselves to providing as much comfort and care as possible. While the cost of the treatment remains a formidable obstacle, the support offered by Palliative Peace has been a beacon of hope for Jyot's parents during this challenging time.
The team arranged for a BiPAP machine, a crucial piece of equipment that assists Jyot with breathing, ensuring that he can have a better quality of life. This machine helps Jyot breathe more easily, allowing him to remain as comfortable as possible. This gesture, though it cannot replace the need for the expensive treatment, demonstrates the commitment to alleviating Jyot’s suffering and providing him with the best care possible.
Jyot is under the diligent care of the Palliative Peace community, receiving frequent visits to PGIMER for supportive treatments. These visits are vital for managing his condition and providing his family with the necessary medical support. The team’s presence has become a cornerstone of Jyot’s care, offering both practical assistance and emotional reassurance.
Despite the enormity of the financial burden, Palliative Peace focuses on what can be done—providing unwavering social and moral support. The team’s efforts to maintain Jyot’s comfort and dignity underscore the profound impact that compassion and care can have, even in the absence of a cure.
Jyot’s story is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. His journey, marked by significant challenges and heartache, is also filled with the kindness and dedication of those who refuse to give up hope. Through the tireless efforts of Palliative Peace, Jyot’s family is not alone in their struggle; they are supported by a network of care that brings light to their darkest days.
In the face of overwhelming obstacles, Jyot’s story reminds us that while we may not always be able to change the circumstances, we can always strive to make a difference through empathy, support, and unwavering commitment.
